Insulin Pen
Project Synopsis: Explain the general concept of insulin sequencing and the mechanical mechanisms behind the client’s insulin pen.
My team and I focused on consistency in layouts involving both 2D and 3D graphics, and used color to identify the various parts in the device. Animations were utilized to address how parts in suit interacted with one another.

Deepwater Horizon
Project Synopsis: Portray the events of an oil spill and the effects on the local ecosystem.
I took an editorial and isometric approach to make the compositions and content more interesting. With a dark style, the story comes to life as the slides build in progression.
Antibodies

Project Synopsis: A tutorial on a specific antibody technology.
This was a complex project that involved many scientific concepts that needed to be expressed efficiently. Illustrations in static form with incorporation of selective animations were used to layer on information to avoid information overload.

Usability Research
Project Synopsis: Graduate research project conducted in 2014 on macromolecular visualization issues related to user interactions and analysis on usability concepts within a particular scientific database (PDB). The interface design was based on scientists’ preferences, frustrations, such as inconsistencies and ambiguity in features and being overwhelmed by too much visual information.
With Big Data, funding cuts, and technological challenges, the challenges of structural research will continue to advance in complexity. It is urgent for usability to be acknowledged and incorporated into the different areas of scientific research.

Graphic Design & Illustrations
Project Synopsis: Digital signage used to advertise various student service events thrown by the UIC Business Department. Bright colors and use of typography as the primary design elements drove the composition and aesthetics.
Project Synopsis: Landing pages and revamped proposal for a new service provided by Trialgraphix. Flat design paired with illustrations and clean typography, gave it a modern feel.
Project Synopsis: Social media content and material for a Chicago election. The candidate was an incumbent and by playing off of his iconic looks and use of bright colors, the campaign had a fresh and exciting look. And yes, he did ride a scooter to the office.
Project Synopsis: Media guides for digital production. Maverick Illustrated adhered to the 2011-2012 season brand that played off the concept of Sport Illustrated. For the football postseason guide, I was allowed more creative freedom by using imagery layering and dark tones to create a dramatic cover.
Project Synopsis: Team logo concepts for a City of Chicago’s Parks District youth hockey program. The neighborhood has a large irish population and I incorporated Celtic elements throughout the designs.
Project Synopsis: Large digital signage produced for international rugby games at Chicago’s Soldier Field.
Because why not?
I went to bed one night still rolling designs and concepts around in my mind and for some reason, completely unrelated to my work project, this image popped in my head. It’s so ridiculous I couldn’t ignore it.
A personal project revisiting traditional techniques that focused on gray values and hair. I wanted to cause static drama by creating stark contrasting in gray tones and explored geometric shapes to make it unpredictable. Graphite and Adobe Illustator.

Medical Illustrations
Project Synopsis: Create a general anatomy piece that displays the comparison of an uninjured lumbar disk to the plaintiff’s preexisting condition before a slip and fall incident. The angle of the subject of very important. Adobe Illustrator.
Project Synopsis: Create an illustration that orientates the jury to the location of the sinuses in the skull and identify relevant structures that were involved in an undiagnosed sinus infection. The gray scale tones served as a base and animation was utilized to highlight the various anatomical elements. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
Project Synopsis: I decided on a line drawing for conscious client to depict the osteophytes compressing the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) in the lumbar region. Ultimately, a medical device within the IVC snagged on the boney projection and relocated to that area. Adobe Illustrator.
Project Synopsis: Demonstrate the location of the artificial aortic valve impeding on the opening of the left coronary artery, which resulted in a larger vessel and a tear in the wall of the artery. Adobe Illustrator.
Project Synopsis: Used with an expert witness, this illustration needed to give general anatomy of the major arteries of the brain. In particular, an emphasis on the Posterior choroidal arteries was needed, as the plaintiff claimed they were blocked during an embolization procedure and caused irreversible harm to the brain. The brain is a complex object and I incorporated line work to help simplify the information presented. Adobe Illustrator.
Project Synopsis: Provide a step-by-step explanation of a surgical procedure used to repair a plaintiff’s intertrochanteric fracture (hip fracture). This was one of two boards depicting the surgery and by incorporating a numbers, it aided in walking the jurors through the complicated procedure. Adobe Illustrator.

Melanie holds a M.S. in Biomedical Visualization from the University of Illinois at Chicago and is a board certified medical illustrator. She received a B.F.A in Drawing with a second concentration in Graphic Design and minor in Human Biology from Minnesota State University, Mankato.
